Concerned over plight of sanitation workers who suffer from various respiratory ailments, a 12-year-old student from Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh has come up with unique clean energy based garbage collector to aid in cleanliness work.

Deepak Chandel, a Class 7 student of Government Senior Secondary Jhanduta in Bilaspur district, has designed the model with the use of bicycle.

Placing a cardboard box and fan on bicycle, Deepak created vacuum pressure which is connected with a pipe to collect garbage in open areas where lots of physical hardship is required to complete the job.

“While participating in cleanliness drive of the school, I got to know about the hardships faced by sanitation workers in cleaning roadsides and open grounds which prompted me to design the model,” he told The Statesman. The entire model is based on clean energy as soon as one start cycling, it generates electricity with the help of a dynamo and the energy is utilized for its operations, he said.

He said though the model is designed for cleaning open spaces, the garbage collector can also help in cleaning spaces between almirahs or bed which is otherwise a tough task.

“The model would also help in Swachh Bharat Mission as fewer workforces would be required for keeping large areas clean which will result in better sanitation and clean environment,” he added.

It would also protect the sanitation workers from contracting various respiratory diseases as bronchitis or asthma, he quipped.

His science teacher and mentor, Dinesh Kumar Sharma said his model had already won laurel for his invention at Zonal level and he was awarded with Rs 10,000 cash prize on behalf of Union government’s Department Science and Technology.

The cost effective technique would help in homes and surroundings clean, he said, adding he has made the school and state proud by the unique invention.
