Three Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) supporters, including the driver of the absconding leader Bimal Gurung, were arrested at Tukvar in Darjeeling on Tuesday in connection with violence and arson that occurred during the recent Gorkhaland agitation in Darjeeling.
The trio was produced in the Siliguri Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (ACJM) on Wednesday. The court remanded two of them in five days’ police custody, and the driver in five days’ police remand.
The Darjeeling Sadar Police Station arrested Anup Pradhan, 35, a resident of Badamtam in Darjeeling, Uday Gurung, 34, a resident of Ging Tea Estate in Darjeeling and driver Sidhant BIswakarma, a resident of Tukvar, Second Division.
From Tukvar, the trio was brought to Khoribari and was produced in the ACJM court on Wednesday. “The ACJM remanded the driver, Mr Biswakarma, in five-day police custody, and the next day of production before the ACJM is after five days.
Meanwhile, the other two accused will undergo interrogation and the ACJM will decide on their fate after five days, whether they will get bail or not,” said assistant public prosecutor of the court, Sudip Roy Basunia.
“Charges under Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP) have been slapped on them. The trio had torched the North Bengal State Transport Corporation mini bus at the Darjeeling motor stand during the separate statehood agitation last year,” added Mr Roy Basunia said.
