Protests by students erupted across the state over the alleged rape of a student of a private college in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, around 140 km from here.
Police said the incident came to light on Thursday after the student confided in her friends about the teacher raping her in the staff room of the college.
The news of alleged sexual assault spread like wildfire and students thrashed the accused teacher before he was taken into custody by the police.
Sources said the victim was called by the teacher to his room on the pretext of giving her study material and then he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The victim alleged that she was threatened by the teacher and he had allegedly tied her hands and feet before sexually assaulting her.
The victim’s parents filed a complaint in this regard after which the accused was arrested and booked for sexually assaulting her, Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Raman Kumar Meena said.
Further investigations into the matter are on and the victim has been sent for medical examination. Meanwhile, the statements of both the accused and the victim are being recorded.
Meanwhile, activists of student unions Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Students Federation of India (SFI) staged protest across the state and demanded strict action against the accused teacher. They called upon the state government for strict measures to ensure women safety across the state.
