‘Step up vigil in correctional homes’

Mamata Banerjee also announced plans to recruit 89,000 teachers soon

Peeved over reports of anti-social activities inside the Chinsurah correctional home, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday directed the police to immediately step up vigil.

While addressing the administrative meeting at Gurap in Hooghly, Miss Banerjee questioned as to how mafias within the correctional home were using mobiles, laptops and other means of communication to spread anti-social activities in the residential areas. She directed Ajay Kumar, CP Chandannagar Commissionerate, to maintain vigilance to check such activities.

It may be mentioned here that notorious criminal Nepu Giri along with 10 undertrial convicts were brought to Chinsurah from the Presidency correctional home on 17 January.

Giri and his associates had turned violent when they were being frisked by the police on duty before sending them to their respective cells in Hooghly correctional home.

The convicts even attacked the police personnel and inflicted injuries, damaged and ransacked the office within the correctional home. They had reportedly fetched kerosene oil from the kitchen and set it as well as the correctional home library and five other sections on fire.

The provisions for the prisoners were burnt to ashes and a huge police contingent from Chandannagar Commissionerate rushed to bring the situation under control. In response, Mr Kumar assured Miss Banerjee that necessary steps have already been taken to prevent similar incidents in the correctional homes in future.

Meanwhile, Miss Banerjee asked the police to ensure that peace prevails during the rallies of Ram Navami and Mahavir Jayanti. “Ram Navami is ahead.

The rallies should be held peacefully. Nobody should be allowed to carry arms and ammunitions in the processions. The Mahavir Jayanti is on 29 March.

Examinations are scheduled on that day. So processions should be held after 5 p.m.,” she said.

Miss Banerjee also directed the municipal heads and panchayat pradhans to intensify vigil and work seriously to combat dengue. She anno-unced prizes for good work at both the levels.
