Even as the state PWD department is ranked among the best performers, secretary of the department Indevar Pande issued a stern warning against the 30 per cent employees who don’t work.

“Seventy per cent of the employees of the department work hard but remaining do not do so. It is to be remembered that gone are the days when salary and pension were ensured even if employees did not work.

Non-performance would not be tolerated anymore. Despite repeated warnings, a section of the staff stay back from work,” said Mr Pande while addressing a programme at Nabanna to felicitate 10 PWD engineers for their outstanding performance.

Mr Pande’s statement comes close on the heels of the department temporarily suspending eight engineers and seeking an explanation from them over complaints of lack of supervision and poor road quality in Nadia.

Earlier, departmental inquiry was initiated against two engineers for poor condition of Bhedia-Bolpur road.

PWD minister Aroop Biswas while felicitating the engineers urged all employees to work hard and continue the good work.

“I’m being appreciated for the hard work of the employees of the department. This is the only department that rewards its employees for performing well.

Three of the engineers awarded today had worked for 20 hours during FIFA U-17 tournament.

We appreciate their dedication. All major projects of the state are being undertaken by PWD. Again, the department has regularly been appreciated for their work in developing different infrastructures in Bengal,” said Mr Biswas.

The engineers were selected on the basis of their performances including how much work they have managed to execute, their duration of duty and uniqueness in designing a project.

The initiative to reward best performing engineers were started by PWD two years back in order to motivate its employees so that they work harder to prove their excellence in their respective areas of work.
