Captain Amarinder Singh government on Tuesday approved the appointment of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s grandson Guriqbal Singh as deputy superintendent of police (DSP) on ‘compassionate grounds’.

The service rules have been relaxed to enable the appointment as a special case, said the spokesperson. Singh had crossed the maximum age, 28, by a year for direct recruitment as DSP in Punjab. He is the youngest grandson of Beant Singh, who was assassinated by terrorists on August 31, 1995. He is the brother of Ludhiana Lok Sabha member, Ravneet Bittu.
