A 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing a person who the accused claimed was extorting money from him, a Crime Branch official said on Friday.

Unit 11 of the Crime Branch began investigations after the body of Ambadas Laxman Shinde (29), a Borivali resident, was found on July 30, an official said.

He said that the probe led to Bharat Nitin Das, alias Sonu Khadda, who was arrested from Dahisar check post based on a tip-off.

“A trap was laid at Dahisar check post and Das was nabbed on July 31 when he came to meet a friend,” the official said.

“During interrogation, Das told police that on the day of the incident, Shinde had taken money and a mobile from him.

This led to an altercation,” said Chimaji Adhav, senior inspector of Crime Branch’s Unit 11.

Adhav said that Das, and one more person, attacked Shinde with a sharp weapon and then smashed his head with a stone.

Further investigations are currently underway, Adhav said.
