Mumbai: HDFC bank removes ‘anti-homeless’ spikes after public outrage

After public outrage over installation of ‘anti-homeless’ iron spikes outside HDFC bank branch in Fort Mumbai, the bank has regretted the decision and removed the spikes.

The HDFC bank tweeted, “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to the public by the installation of the spikes at our Fort Branch, as part of the recent renovation. We’re having the spikes removed on priority”.

The decision to install  ‘anti-homeless’ spikes to discourage people from sleeping in front of the bank caught the ire of the public on social media.

Photos of the spikes were widely shared on social media and the decision to install them was lambasted by the public. Many pointed out the lack of empathy shown by the bank towards homeless people.

People also questioned the installation of the spikes as they may become a safety hazard for pedestrians.

The outrage led to a response by HDFC’s Corporate Communications Head, Neeraj Jha. In a tweet, Neeraj apologised for the inconvenience and said that the spikes will be removed.

He also shared a photo of the bank after the spikes were removed.
