The statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Kanakeswer High School in Debgram village under Balikuda police station was vandalised by an unidentified person on Tuesday.

The statue, located inside the compound of the Kanakeswer High school of Debgram village, was defaced after school hours, according to the police. The school does not have a boundary wall.

A local spotted that the statue of Gandhi had been damaged. Residents alleged that miscreants often sat near the statue to smoke and consume liquor.

Head Master of the High School, Ajaya Kumar Kundu, has lodged an FIR at Balikuda police station. A case has been registered and investigations are on.

Kundu said statue had been installed in 2016. He also said his predecessor had lodged complains regarding rise of anti-social activities near the school due to absence of a boundary wall and security.
