Magnitude 3.8 earthquake strikes Kangra in Himachal Pradesh

An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 on the Richter scale struck Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra on Friday afternoon, tremors of which were felt as far as Kapurthala in Punjab and Kisthwar in Jammu-Kashmir.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the earthquake struck Kangra at a depth of the 10 kilometre in Kangra. The epicentre of the quake was the city itself.

The intensity of the quake was measured at VI, which is classified as strong quake causing light damage.

There were, however, no reports of damage to property or life.

Earthquakes have been hitting Himachal Pradesh with increased frequency over the last few months.

The state alone has been rocked by four earthquakes of low intensity in June, three of which hit Chamba.

While an earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale hit Chamba on 26 June, another measuring 3.0 struck the same place on 23 June.

The previous two quakes struck Chamba and Shimla regions on 14 June and 17 June, respectively.

On 1 July, a magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale struck Sonipat in Haryana tremors of which were felt across Delhi-NCR region, Haryana, Punjab, northern Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh.
