The two-day long turmoil at Jadavpur University campus came to an end on Wednesday after the authorities made important announcements regarding the admission procedure, which more or less addressed the demands of the students.

The announcement prompted the agitating Arts Faculty Students’ Union to withdraw the gherao of the vice-chancellor and other EC members, after 44 hours.

“The Central Admission Committee will conduct the admissions and the departments will have no involvement in the proceArts Faculty Students,” said Mr Pradip Ghosh, pro-vice-chancellor of the university, on Wednesday.

“Also, for admission in all six subjects ~ English, comparative literature, political science( international relation), philosophy, history and Bengali ~ marks of class-XII board examination and the performance in the entrance exams will be considered in the ratio of 50:50.”

Mr Ghosh declared that the system will be followed for the current year’s admissions, while for the next year, the authorities have requested the executive council (EC) to announce the rules and regulations before time, which the EC has agreed to do so. He said that classes will commence on time even though the admission test might get delayed by five to seven days.

Meanwhile, the governor, Mr Keshari Nath Tripathi, on being asked about the incident, said: “I have read the news in the newspapers and the matter is being taken up by the vice-chancellor.”

It may be mentioned here that out of six subjects, for admission in four subjects ~ history, comparative literature, political science and philosophy ~ 50 per cent of the aggregate marks at class XII board examination with 50 per cent of the marks obtained in the entrance test would be taken into consideration.

Similar criterion has been decided for Bengali, with 50 per cent of the marks, including Bengali and English in class XII-board examination, and 50 per cent of marks obtained in the admission test to be considered. For English, the criteria is 50 per cent of the marks in the subject in class- XII board examination clubbed with 50 per cent of marks obtained in the entrance test.

The JU authorities condemned the gherao at the campus by some students and termed it as ‘wrongful’. Soon after the announcement, the agitating students made way for VC Suranjan Das and other EC members to leave the campus at around 4 p.m.
