Jajpur farmer under stress hangs self

A farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in an under-construction house at Kantigadia village under Dharmashala police station in Jajpur district on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Subodh Das (42). Family sources said Subodh, who had grown paddy in five acres of land, was under severe mental stress after his crops were washed away by unseasonal rains two months ago.

He had grown paddy in two acres of his own and another three acres as a share cropper. He had incurred a loan of over Rs 2 lakh from a micro finance organisation, local bank as well as money lenders. “He was under severe mental agony how to pay five loan installments in a month after his crop lost two months back.

He was suffering from fever for last two days. I was to take him to the local hospital in the morning. But, he took such drastic step late last night,” said Annapurna Das ,wife of the deceased. When the news of his suicide spread several farmers visited his house. Dharmasala police has registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post mortem.
