In a gruesome incident, a husband stabbed his wife, her mother and niece in the family court premises on Monday in Odisha’s Sambalpur.
The lady, identified as Sangita Choudhury, died in VSSIMSAR Hospital, Burla, while undergoing treatment.
Sangita, who hailed from Sindurpank village, had married Ramesh Kumbhar last year. But the marriage did not last and she returned two months after her marriage.
Her parents arranged for her second marriage in Bihar.
Ramesh filed a case in the family court here. During counselling on Monday, Ramesh suddenly attacked his wife, her mother Lalita and her sister’s two-year-old daughter Sibani with a sharp weapon while abusing the family for having arranged Sangita’s marriage in Bihar.
After critically injuring the women, Ramesh chased his father-in-law Phudan Choudhury who fled for his life. Choudhury escaped by rushing into the office of the Tehsildar, where people came to his rescue.
The people at the Tehsildar’s office also overpowered Ramesh and handed over him to the police.
The three injured persons were rushed to the district headquarter hospital and then shifted to VSSIMSAR at Burla where Sangita breathed her last.
“The condition of Sangita’s mother is also critical while the two-year-old is out of danger,” said doctors.
Both the people and lawyers in the court have expressed outrage over the incident. Raising questions on how Ramesh entered the court premises with a sharp object, the lawyers have demanded increase in the security in the entire court premises.
