HP witnessing rise in crime against senior citizens

The state of Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a rise in crime against senior citizens, ranking ninth in the country, based on the crime data.   This is revealed in the latest report of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) that was released recently, highlighting that vulnerability of senior citizens in the state.

In the absence of safe practice, according to the NCRB data, crime against senior citizens (60 years and above) witnessed a spurt with 233 cases in 2016 against 159 in the previous year.

Amongst all the 29 states and 7 Union Territories in the country, HP is in the ninth spot in terms of total number of incidents reported per lakh population, accounting for rate of 33.1, whereas, in 2015 HP ranked eleventh at 22.6.The average rate of the country stood at 20.6. Chandigarh (71.6) is the worst in the country in 2016, a jump from 38.8, and eighth place as compared to the previous year.

Chandigarh is followed by Madhaya Pradesh (67.9), Delhi (59.7), Andhra Pradesh (46.4), Chhattisgarh (45.0), Maharashtra (42.3), Telangana (40.1), and Tamil Naidu (38.5).

However, among the northern states alone, HP again continues to be the worst for the third consecutive year, while Haryana is at 15.2, Punjab 3.2 and Uttarakhand 0.1.

In HP crime head-wise against elderly, as many as 10 cases of murder and 1 case of attempt of murder were reported in 2016, whereas, in 2015, 8 cases of murder and 2 cases of attempt of murder were reported.

There was also increase in the cases of grievous hurt with 15 cases reported at a rate of 2.1 from 7 cases in 2015. 204 cases were reported in other Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes against 132, in the previous year.
