Health centres opened hastily under review: Parmar

Himachal Pradesh Health Minister Vipin Singh Parmar

Himachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Minister, Vipin Singh Parmar on Wednesday said the government is reviewing the health institutions opened by the previous Congress government hastily before the model code of conduct was enforced in 2017.

“The previous Congress government had opened 103 health institutions at the eleventh hour without following the laid down parameters regarding population coverage, patient numbers, and without any infrastructure.

We are reviewing them and will decide on merit,” said Parmar, replying to a question by Congress member Inder Dutt Lakhanpal.

“The previous government upgraded 52 health sub centres to Primary Health Centres, although there is no such provision. Not only this, 51 other health institutions were also opened without following parameters or even the financial approval,” he said, holding that health institutions can’t be opened on political parameters. “We can’t run them with just announcements,” he said.

On a supplementary by Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu that whether the government intends to close these institutions, Parmar reiterated that the government will review it. “Seventy per cent of the health institutions opened at the fag end by the previous government are not feasible,” he said.

“But the Jai Ram Thakur government is sensitive and will not compromise on parameters. That’s why the government has given approval for appointment of 200 doctors immediately after assuming office,” he said.
