Failing to convince the area police to register a case of attempted rape, a teenage girl attempted to set herself ablaze on the SSP office’s premises in Meerut on Monday. Police personnel present there on duty managed to stop her.
Raghuraj Singh, PRO to SSP, said the police chief had asked SP (Rural) Rajesh Kumar to conduct an inquiry into the matter.
The girl has charged the staff at Mundali police station with not taking action on her complaint against her neighbour’s son, who allegedly tried to sexually assault her a few days ago.
Failing to get justice, the girl said, she decided to take the drastic step of burning herself alive.
The girl, who is a student and a resident of Murlipur village of Mundali, arrived at the SSP office along with her family members on Monday afternoon. She doused herself with petrol with the intent of setting herself on fire.
The police personnel stationed at the SSP office immediately rushed forward and prevented her from doing so. The women police officers washed off the petrol from the girl’s body and tried to comfort her before taking her to SSP Rajesh Pandey.
The girl narrated her ordeal before the SSP, who assured her of a fair probe in the matter and directed the SP (Rural) to conduct an inquiry.
When contacted, Mundali police station SHO Umesh Malik claimed that the girl was falsely implicating Sheeshpal’s son.
“Her family had an altercation with Sheeshpal’s family in village Murlipur on 2 June, and it seems that girl is trying to falsely implicate Sheeshpal’s son,” he said.
