Former Jodhpur Rajmata Krishna Kumari passes away at 93

Former Jodhpur Rajmata Krishna Kumari, who had also been a member of Parliament, passed away at a private hospital in the Rajasthan city on Monday night. The 93-year-old had been ailing.

The former MP was admitted to the hospital after her condition deteriorated. According to reports, a VIP cottage at the hospital had been turned into an intensive care unit (ICU) for her treatment, and she died there.

Several political leaders expressed grief on her demise.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said: “Deeply saddened by the demise of Rajmata Krishna Kumari ji of Jodhpur. A champion for women empowerment and girls’ education, Rajmata was an inspiration to the women of #Rajasthan.”

In his condolence message, former CM Ashok Gehlot said: “Deeply saddened to know about the passing away of #Jodhpur Rajmata and former MP Smt Krishna Kumari ji.. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family…may god give them strength to bear the loss and may her soul rest in peace.”

The body of former Rajmata (queen mother) of the Jodhpur royal family will be kept on the Umaid Bhawan Palace premises at 1.30 pm on Tuesday for the public and family members to see her one last time, local media reported. The funeral will take place at 4 pm on Tuesday.

Krishna Kumari had contested the 1971 Lok Sabha election as an Independent candidate and won. She founded the Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls Public School in Jodhpur, and is also remembered for her contribution to the expansion of air and rail services in Jodhpur.
