Under lens for gold smuggling, Delhi jeweller jumps to death from DRI office

A Delhi-based jeweller jumped to his death from the sixth floor of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) building at the CGO complex in the national capital.

The jeweller, identified as Gaurav Gupta,  was visiting the DRI office in connection with an alleged gold smuggling case.

The 40-year-old jeweller was waiting in the visitors’ room inside the DRI office at the CGO complex area, when he took the extreme step around 12 noon on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, acting on information the officers of the DRI conducted searches at his residence and office.

During the search operations, the officers seized around 6 kg of foreign-marked gold and 213 kg of silver bullion from his residence, the statement said. In further search operation on Wednesday, the officers seized 35 kg more foreign-marked gold concealed in the door panel of the safe of one of his shops, DRI officials said.

In total 41 kg of foreign marked gold, 213 kg of silver bullion and Rs 48 lakh cash, valued at around Rs 13 crore were seized, officials said.

Gupta was neither summoned nor arrested by the DRI, official added.

The man was immediately taken to the Safdarjung hospital by the officers of the DRI and the Central Industrial Security Force of CGO complex, but could not be saved, it said, adding that local police has been intimated and further investigation are underway.

However, family and relatives of the deceased have alleged that he was murdered by the DRI officials and has written a letter to the SHO of Shalimar Bagh to take stringent action against the officials.
