Delhi Police cop injured in ‘celebratory’ firing

A Delhi Police sub-inspector was injured in an alleged celebratory firing during a birthday party in New Delhi’s Rohini area.

The sub-inspector was attending a birthday party of his friend’s daughter on Friday night, when he got injured. He is admitted to Saroj Hospital for treatment with injuries on his chest and shoulder.

The police is yet to determine if the injury was due to celebratory firing or intentional.

The sub-inspector has been identified as Harish, who was posted at Shahbad Dairy police station.

A case under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered against unidentified people, however, Harish’s family has not blamed anyone as the people at the party were known to the officer.

In May 2018, Bihar government had cancelled the deputation of a senior police officer to the Central Bureau of Investigation after a video showed him engaging in celebratory firing at a party.

The video showed Jain firing shots in the air as outgoing District Magistrate Mithilesh Mishra sang a song from the Hindi film “Sholay” at the party. Jain reportedly fired 10 shots in the air at the Katihar Golf Course.
