Delhi BJP chief and Member of Parliament from North East Delhi Manoj Tiwari on Sunday celebrated Diwali with the residents of the unauthorised colonies of the National Capital.

This assumes significance, especially political since almost 40 lakh people of Delhi living in the unauthorized colonies of the city have been given ownership rights to their properties by the Union Cabinet.

Manoj Tiwari said that it would be a Double Diwali for the 40 lakh people of the National Capital who are living in the unauthorized colonies of the city as the Union Cabinet had on Wednesday approved a proposal to give ownership rights to close to 40 lakh people living in 1, 728 unauthorized colonies in Delhi. This was announced by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar who said that for people who are set to benefit from the move, it heralds a “Grand Diwali” celebration.

This is a very significant development since the elections for the Delhi assembly are going to be held in early 2020 and the Union Cabinet’s approval to regularise 1,728 unauthorised colonies might have big political fallout.

Tiwari tweeted a video in which he was seen lighting earthen lamps and bursting firecrackers with a group of people from the unauthorised colonies.

He also shared pictures of his mother lighting earthen lamps on the occasion of Diwali.
