After the arrest of several imposters posing as discom officials, BSES discom has issued an advisory that Delhiites should verify the identity of discom officials before letting them in their houses.

“We have been regularly urging our consumers to be wary of such unscrupulous elements. We once again appeal to our consumers not to get intimidated or induced by threats and/or false assurances of the ‘impostors’ and not give them any money – whatever be the reason. All fines and penalties and commercial payments are to be made only at designated BSES offices” said the BSES spokesperson.

The spokesperson further said: “Consumers should first ascertain and verify the identity of the people claiming to be from BSES, when they visit their premises. People should first ask for their Identity Cards and look for the following to ascertain its genuineness and cross verify BSES Logo and Hologram, date of Issue, validity, photograph, signature of authorized signatory, signature of employee, Employee Number / I Card Number, Name / Logo / Address of the Contractor and Lamination.”

“If consumers have any doubt or notice anything suspicious, they should immediately alert the nearest BSES office or call 262 73311 / 39999707 for BRPL and 8010930719 /41999808 for BYPL or inform the local Police on # 100,” he said.

Delhi Police busted a gang of impostors in South Delhi who masqueraded as BSES officials. The gang used to exhort money from unsuspecting residents by threatening them with legal action. Delhi Police apprehended them near Asian Market, MB Road. The gang leaders Brijesh Sharma alias Prashant alias Bunty and Sanjay Kumar (alias Shakeel) have also been arrested.

The gang allegedly tried to scare residents by telling them that their electricity meter had been tampered, which was tantamount to power-theft – not only attracting a heavy penalty, but also imprisonment. Later, they tried to ‘settle’ the case for a certain “sum” of money.
