Appreciating the “anti-Romeo squads” of the UP police, Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari on Saturday said that they should also be formed by Delhi Police to ensure women’s safety in the national capital.
“Anti-Romeo squad is a very good thing and it is being started in UP again. It should be welcomed as it is related to women safety. In my opinion, it should be started in Delhi also,” said Tiwari.
He praised UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for starting such squads to curb eve-teasing.
“Eve-teasing incidents in buses, Metro and other places in Delhi are a matter of great concern. I demand Delhi Police to form special squads as has been done in Uttar Pradesh so that no one troubles and teases our sisters and daughters,” the Delhi BJP chief reportedly said.
He urged Delhi Police to deploy plain-clothes officers in such special squads to check eve-teasing incidents.
Anti-Romeo squads were formed to check stalkers and eve-teasers in UP soon after Yogi Adityanath assumed power in 2017. The BJP government in UP was, however, criticised by various sections of the society as self-appointed vigilantes started harassing couples in the name of protection of women.
Yogi recently ordered the squads to begin a fresh drive following a recent spurt of crimes against women in UP.
Tiwari’s proposal was slammed by the ruling AAP in Delhi which asserted that the BJP was suggesting such an idea to hide the “failures” of Delhi Police.
“We saw what anti-Romeo squads did in Uttar Pradesh where they caught brothers and sisters going together. We will not let it happen in Delhi,” AAP leader Sanjay Singh reportedly said.
