The Delhi Police on Friday suspended a sub-inspector in charge of the police post at Inderlok area over his misconduct with people offering namaz (prayer) on the road on Friday.
A video of the incident had gone viral on social media where people could be seen offering Friday prayers on the road while the police officer allegedly kicking worshippers.
According to the DCP North, locals were contacted and the people gathered at the spot were pacified after convincing them that the police official was immediately suspended and further disciplinary action would be taken against him. The situation was brought to normal with the cooperation from the residents of the area.
Announcements were also made through mosques that action against the said policeman had been taken, which further helped in convincing the protestors who had gathered following the incident.
The incident which was caught on video and later went viral had soared tensions initially as people gathered in protest.
This incident took place in the afternoon during the Friday prayers. It is being said the people who did not get a place inside the mosque, laid their prayer mats on the road outside.
The incident enraged the locals, who blocked the road and demanded immediate action against the policeman.
Security has been stepped up in the area to maintain law and order situation, while police appealed to the locals to maintain peace.
Meanwhile, DCP North East Joy Tirkey said the people of his district have always cooperated with the police in maintaining law and order. “We condemn the incident at Inderlok,” the DCP said, taking to platform X, and added that, in view of this, strict instructions have been given to all the police personnel.
He also appealed to the people to maintain social harmony and not pay attention to rumours.
