Flight attendant Anissia Batra, who allegedly committed suicide in south Delhi’s Panchsheel Park last Friday, came to know only recently that her husband Mayank Singhvi was a divorcee.
The Delhi Police suspect this could have been the reason Anissia was upset.
According to a senior officer privy to details of the investigation, the 39-year-old came to know a month ago that Mayank Singhvi was a divorcee.
“He had not told her about his first marriage. After she found out about his earlier relationship, she was quite hurt. It is suspected that they must have had arguments over it,” the officer told PTI.
Anissia, who worked with a German airline, married Singhvi on February 23, 2016, and it was a love marriage.
Batra allegedly jumped from the terrace of her house on 13 July. Her family claimed that Singhvi used to physically abuse her and also accused his parents of harassing her for dowry.
The police arrested Singhvi on Monday and he was sent to judicial custody for 14 days on Tuesday.
In their complaint, Anissia’s family said Singhvi used to “physically assault” her and ask for money. “Another issue that the couple had a fight about was Ms Batra selling off her flat in Vasant Vihar,” said the senior officer.
Anissia’s family has also alleged that Singhvi’s parents would instigate fights between the couple.
Before allegedly committing suicide, Anissia had sent a message to her husband saying “he would see her dead face”, said the police.
Anissia Batra’s family maintained that it was a case of murder even as the police registered a suicide case on Saturday.
