Ghulam Nabi Patel, a Congress leader of Pulwama in South Kashmir, was on Wednesday shot dead by terrorists who fired at him in the Rajpura Chowk when he was travelling in his vehicle under police protection.
The two policemen accompanying him were injured in the terrorist firing.
Police said that Patel, a resident of Dangerpura Shadimarg, succumbed to his injuries.
The injured policemen have been identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Zargar and Bilal Ahmad Mir who has been hospitalised.
Patel till last year was general secretary of Pulwama district unit of PDP and joined the Congress during the byelection for the Srinagar and Anantnag Lok Sabha seats.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has condemned the killing of the Congress activist.
The Chief Minister expressed sympathy with the bereaved family.
