In a setback for the Congress in Gujarat ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, party’s national spokesperson Rohan Gupta on Friday resigned from the party.

He resigned from the Congress citing “constant humiliation” by one of the senior leaders of the party.

Notably, Gupta recently withdrew his candidature from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad East Lok Sabha seat as Congress candidate due to the serious medical condition of his father.

In his resignation letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Gupta wrote, “I hereby, resign from all the posts and primary membership of Congress party with immediate effect.”

Without naming, he said, “I am deeply pained to inform you that constant humiliation and character assassination by one of the senior leaders connected with Communication Department of the party for last two years (which many senior party leaders are aware of) and now at the time of personal crisis which has compelled me to take this decision.”

“I have served the party for the last 13 years. I had to take most difficult decision of my life of withdrawing my candidature and putting my ambition aside for my father when I am battling through the serious health issues of my father and passing through the worst possible phase of life, the same leader again continued his defamatory campaign against me for last three days with support of his close aids at Gujarat and at national level,” Gupta said.

He further said, “His behavior has caused serious mental agony and stress and has compelled me to resign from the party with a broken heart to protect my

self-respect.”

Gupta has expressed his gratitude to the party’s central leadership and workers for their support. He urged the party to control “such leaders who have damaged the party and forced committed workers and leaders to leave the party”.
