Congress has sought for enacting stringent law against drug peddling in Himachal Pradesh.
A delegation of the HP Congress party led by the president Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu presented a memorandum to Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday regarding enacting stringent laws against the drug peddling in the state.
The delegation also urged the CM to frame stringent laws against the drug abuse so that fears of laws discourage the drug peddlers to refrain from drug trafficking.
He assured the delegation that the state government was committed to make HP a drug-free state of the country.
It was due the initiatives of the state government that a meeting of seven neighbouring states was held at Chandigarh on Monday in which CMs of four northern states participated, said Jai Ram.
He said that it has been decided that a joint strategy would be chalked out by these neighbouring states to formulate an effective strategy for checking drug abuse. He said that the state government would also take up the matter to check drug abuse and peddling of synthetic drugs by conducting regular check on Pharma industries.
Expressing concern, Sukhu blamed the flourishing drug trade for destroying the youth of the state and the social fabric.
Besides, the areas of the HP sharing border with Punjab, the other areas too is falling under the grip of drug addiction, which needs to be timely curbed, he said and demanded for severe punishment for those involved in drug trade.
