Champion of human rights of Assam succumbs to cancer

Birubala Rabha, a renowned human rights activist from Assam and Padmashree awardee, died on Monday morning in a hospital here.

Rabha, who had dedicated her life to combating the evil of witch-hunt, was suffering from cancer. She succumbed to the advanced stage three cancer at a cancer hospital.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief at Rabha’s passing. Taking to microblogging site X, he said, “I am deeply distressed to learn about the passing away of Padma Shri Smt. Birubala Rabha. Through her untiring efforts to end social evils, she illuminated the paths of scores of women with hope and confidence.”

The state government covered all the expenses incurred on her medical treatment.
