Centre to address issue of civilians living near cantonment areas

Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will address conference of elected representatives of 62 cantonment boards in the country to address the various problems being faced by civilian population residing around these areas.

The Member of Parliament (MP) from Shimla, Virender Kashyap said the conference would aim for amicable and practical solution keeping in best interests of both army and civil population.“It would also work towards devising ways and means for enhanced and better cooperation among civil and military establishment for larger interest of society,” he said.

He informed Defence minister that civilian population in some cantonment boards are debarred from building construction in their own private land which has stopped the future growth of these areas. He demanded immediate withdrawal of British Era rule to provide relief to civilian population in cantonment board and start construction activities in these areas to meet growing housing needs of the locals whose population had grown manifold after independence.

He also called for framing new building byelaws in the cantonment areas so as multi-story buildings could be constructed and mandatory permission for 1000 feet small buildings should be done away to avoid procedural delays.
