The Khurja police have arrested a notorious criminal who had a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head from Bulandshahar district.

There was an exchange of fire between the criminal, Rafeeq alias Patanga, and the police, in which the former had sustained injuries, before he was arrested on Tuesday night.

Rafeeq, a resident of Rohinda village, was wanted in over half a dozen cases of loot and murder.

According to Gopal Singh, Circle Officer, Khurja, an injured Rafeeq has been admitted to hospital for treatment.

The police are now on the lookout of Akbar, Rafeeq’s aide. Akbar was accompanying Rafeeq at the time of the shooting but he managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness.

The police have recovered a motorcycle and a pistol with live cartridges from Rafeeq’s possession.

Giving an account of the encounter, Singh said a Khurja police team was on routine patrol on Tuesday midnight, when they spotted a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. When the police asked them to stop the motorcycle-borne criminals, the latter opened fire on the police party.
