Low visibility and landing issues to be resolved: Veer Surendra Sai Airport

The problem of aircraft landing in low visibility and bad weather will be solved soon at Veer Surendra Sai Airport. The instrument which helps pilots for landing and take off will be ready in two weeks, said Airport Director Sudesh Kumar Chauhan.

Talking to media Chauhan said, the Doppler Very high frequency Omni-directional Range (DVOR) collocated with Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) has already been installed at Jharsuguda Airport.

After commissioning of these equipment’s which cost AAI over Rs.6.30 crore the problems faced by airlines will be resolved as it will help reduce the visibility minima up to 3 to 3.5 km according to the type of aircraft, Chauhan said. The present visibility minima is 5 km at Jharsuguda Airport.

He said augmenting advanced navigational aids that is Instrument Landing System (ILS) which will cost Rs.3cr to 4crore is being done. After commissioning of the ILS system, will further reduce minima visibility requirement of flights. Frequent cancellation or last moment cancellation in the past one week due to weather conditions have dismayed stake holders and passengers, admitted Director Chouhan.
