Balasore, hitherto known as a peaceful district, has witnessed a spurt in crime and gang wars resulting in instance of firing, stabbing and murder said veteran politician Arun Dey while calling up Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to take stock of the deteriorating law and order situation during his visit here on Wednesday.

The CM should find some time to review the law and order situation in the district as people here are feeling unsafe, said Dey while addressing media persons here on Monday. He alleged incidents of murders, snat ching, loot and burglaries have become order of the day due to poor policing.

The police administration seems to have collapsed here, the Superintendent of Police does not command the police stations and has no control, he alleged. Recently three instances of mobsters firing at each other have occured and in one case the brother of a gangster was chased and stabbed to death in the broad daylight. “I am raising the issues as a common resident of this district. The situation is grave.

The intellectuals here are scared to speak, fearing reprisal by gangsters”, he said. “Investigations are getti – ng delayed as police stations are engaged in determining their boundaries. Due to lack of control by the police dep – artment, road Romeos are ruling the streets. Rash driving of bikers without number plates goes unchecked,” he said.
