Accused nabbed for demanding extortion on behalf of gangster

An accused was arrested for demanding extortion pertaining to being a member of the gangster Neeraj Bawania, the police said on Monday.

The police said accused Nitin, demanded an extortion amount of Rs 5 lakh from two businessmen in the capital city.He was amazed by the gangster Bawania so; he used his profile to extort money, the police added.

A complaint was received from a businessman about an extortion call made to him by a member of the Bawania gang who demanded Rs. 5 lakh as safety money and threatened to kill the businessman’s family, if the demand was not met.

Based on this complaint, an investigation was launched and the accused, Nitin was arrested. During interrogation, he revealed that after reading news articles and news circulated on social media regarding extortion money demanded by the gangsters, he also thought of making quick money by demanding ransom.

He therefore started making extortion calls by using the name of Neeraj Bawania but due to alertness of crime branch team, he was caught before execution of his plan.

Further, the mobile phone and the SIM card which were used by the accused to make extortion calls, were recovered from his house after his arrest.
