In a tragic incident, the 16-day-old baby who was taken away by a monkey from his home on Saturday morning, was found dead in a well near his home in Odisha’s Talabasta village around 24 hours later.

The infant, son of Rama Krushna Nayak, was sleeping next to his parents at their home in Talabasta village when the monkey took him away. It was reported that the incident happened early in the morning. The mother of the infant had gone to wash her face after waking up, while the child’s father was still sleeping next to him when the incident took place.

A massive search launched by forest officials and the police yielded no result.

The body if the  baby has been sent to a local hospital for post-mortem.

According to media reports, the infant was the first born of the couple and he had not cried since his birth. The baby boy was admitted to a paediatric hospital and had returned home only three days ago, as per a report in the Hindustan Times.

The officials said it became difficult for the teams to spot the baby because he was not crying.

An official of the department had earlier said 30 forest department personnel in three teams, led by Sangram Keshari Mohanty, the ranger of the Damapada Forest Range, were combing the nearby forest area along with the villagers.

Several persons were injured in attacks by monkeys in the area a few days ago. Locals alleged inaction on the part of the forest department despite repeated complaints.
