10 yrs jail for man, Rs 10,000 fine for burning wife alive

The Additional Sessions Judge, Rourkela sentenced a person to 10 years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 fine, for burning alive his wife.

The jail term will extend for another six months in case he fails to deposit the amount. Pinki Chouhan, 22 of Bisra and Paban Munda, 24, of Malgodown, were in love.

However, Pinki’s family was against the marriage, but this did not deter them to continue with their affair.

Finding no way out Pinki eloped with Paban and they got married in 2013 in a temple.

She used to have regular fights with her mother in law. When she went to her parent’s house and stayed, Paban used to visit and persuaded her to return.

On 15 April 2014, Paban poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. Some people found the girl and rushed her to hospital where she died on 18 April, 2014.

Her brother Bholaram Chouhan filed an FIR at Bisra PS against Paban. The judge took into account nine witness, 16 papers and four cir evidences and finally pronounced the judgement on Thursday. Public prosecutor A Pradhan fought the case.
