A total of 2.59 lakh e-Way Bills were generated on the first day of the system becoming mandatory for all inter-state movement of goods.

In a statement, the Finance Ministry said that 2,04,563 e-way bills were generated on the portal till 2 pm on Monday alone.

A total of 11,18,292 taxpayers and 20,057 transporters have registered on e-Way Bill portal till Monday.

On Sunday, 1 April, the e-Way Bill system became mandatory as per decision of the GST Council.

The e-Way Bill, at present, applies to inter-state transportation of goods worth over Rs 50,000 through road, railways, airways and vessels.

For intra-state movement of goods, the new system would be launched in two weeks’ time, Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia had announced last week.

About 1.05 crore businesses have registered under the new GST regime, of which around 70,00,000 are filing returns.

The Finance Ministry clarified on Saturday that a single e-Way Bill will apply even in cases of a break in journey to destination and where more than one transporter is involved in the transportation of goods.

According to the Ministry, the implementation is being done by GSTN in association with the National Informatics Centre (NIC).

Around 100 agents have been deployed to handle queries related to e-way bills.

The Bill can be generated through online via the Internet, Android App, SMS, using Bulk Upload Tool and API based site-to-site integration, etc. Consolidated e-way Bill can be generated by transporters for vehicle carrying multiple consignments.

For the facilitation of large transporters, multiple sub-users have been allowed.

There is a provision for cancellation of e-way Bill within 24 hours by the person who has generated the e-way Bill. The recipient can also reject the e-way Bill within validity period of e-way bill or 72 hours of generation of the e-way bill by the consignor whichever is earlier.

A dedicated portal, https://ewaybillgst.gov.in, has been set up by the government in this regard.
