Petrol, diesel prices continue to rise for third consecutive day amid tension in Middle East

Prices for petrol and diesel continued to rise for third day in a row on Saturday as crude oil prices surged internationally after US airstrike killed a top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, escalating major tension in the Middle East.

In India’s almost all big cities petrol and diesel prices witnessed a sharp surge by 10-11 paise and 15-16 paise respectively.

As per the data showed on the Indian Oil website, Delhi’s petrol and diesel price was at Rs 75.45 a litre Rs 68.40 a litre respectively.

In the financial capital, Mumbai, petrol was being sold at Rs 81.04 per litre and diesel at Rs 71.72 per litre, and in eastern state of Kolkata petrol was priced at Rs 78.04 a litre and Diesel was at Rs 70.76 per litre.

Petrol prices in the southern city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, was at Rs 78.39 a litre and diesel at Rs 72.28 a litre on Saturday morning.

The retail prices of petrol and diesel are dependent on the global crude oil prices and the rupee-US dollar exchange rate as India imports 80 per cent of its crude requirements.

Domestic petrol and diesel prices are reviewed by oil marketing companies on a daily basis. Price revisions are implemented at the fuel stations with effect from 6 a.m.
