Asutosh College has been unable to fill a huge number of undergraduate seats this year as 800 out of 2700 seats are still vacant.
Talking about the reasons behind the higher number of vacancies, Mr Dipak Kumar Kar, principal of Asutosh College said, “As per the rules of the government, every year, five per cent seats are to be increased in a subject-wise manner. But, compared to the number of seats, the number of applicants was less because of which more seats remained vacant.”
“The interest of students has also diverted. Nowadays, students prefer non-traditional subjects more, which means they are opting for courses which are different from the mainstream courses.” he added.
Elaborating on the shortcomings of the new online process of admission, Mr Kar said: “As the entire procedure was online, we could address the concerns of the students only via mail or phone. Applicants who are from remote areas couldn’t reach out to us in person. There were students who missed the admission date but we couldn’t help them.”
“As the verification of documents took place after the applicant was enrolled online, it is difficult to turn down any student during verification as that will give rise to legal issues,” the principal added.
