23-year-old IIT Delhi student committed suicide in hostel room

In what is being so far suspected to be a case of suicide, a student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi was found hanging from the ceiling in his hostel room, the police said on Friday.

The 23-year-old student identified as Varad Sanjay Nerkar was found hanging with a bed sheet tied to the ceiling fan of his hostel room no. 757 of the Dronagiri hostel in the IIT Delhi campus.

The deceased was a student of M Tech final year, and the incident was reported when his phone was found out of reach and one of his friends was asked by the family to check on him.

The deceased’s friend, along with a security guard of IIT, broke open the hostel room’s door when he didn’t respond.

Nerkar was a native of Nashik, Maharashtra, a police official informed.

The police received the information through a PCR call with regard to the incident and a team was sent to the campus.

The spot was inspected by a crime team and the matter is being investigated from all possible angles, the police said.

The student’s family has been informed about the incident while the cause and other aspects of the death are being investigated by the police.
