Cattle smuggling, it seems, has started to spread its wings, despite the ongoing CBI investigation and political debate.

Dozens of smuggled cattle are trafficked regularly from Uttar Pradesh in container vehicles, heading to the state, were rescued by the villagers in East Burdwan while the animals were being shifted in several small trucks parked beside the NH-19 today.

The miscreants involved in trafficking and also operating as receivers, managed to give the police a slip. The matter was immediately informed to the police too but they couldn’t be traced back till now. The police have seized the trafficked cattle.

At Ajhapur crossing in Jamalpur PS area on the NH-19, a section of locals saw a large steel moulded box container vehicle carrying at least five dozen cattle, which was parked beside the NH-19. Small trucks waiting for its arrival started queuing close to it and loading started thereafter. Villagers like Asutosh Mukherjee, Sridhar Ghosh suspected foul play and chased the persons engaged in the job. Asutosh said, “They started fumbling and said that the cattle were loaded in Uttar Pradesh. When we asked them to produce papers, three of them started running away confirming our suspicion.” The police arrived on the spot soon but the miscreants by the time had disappeared from the scene leaving the loaded container.
