Two residents of Bihar died and five others were injured in a head-on collision of two cars coming from opposite directions on Asian Highway-II at Naxalbari near Siliguri today.
The injured are undergoing treatment in the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH), sources said. According to the Police, an Alto car was coming from Kishanganj in Bihar, while a Mahindra Scorpio rammed into it on the road.
Sources said five persons were travelling in the Alto, while there were two persons in the Scorpio when the accident happened in the morning. Police and locals rescued the injured persons, it is learnt.
The deceased have been identified as Md Ekram, 22, and Md Mudasir, 24, both hailing from Kishanganj.
The Sabhadhipati of the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad, Arun Ghosh, rushed to the spot. “We could not understand how the accident occurred. It was a very unfortunate incident. People should be careful at the wheels,” Mr Ghosh said. Police officers said they had started investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
Local people said that one person had died on the spot, while they said both the vehicles were speeding when they collided.
Police said they have sent the bodies to the NBMCH for autopsy.
