Trinamul Congress leaders lambasted Rekha Sharma, president, National Commission for Women for taking active interest to visit Sandeshkhali while the Commission looked the other way when atrocities on women had been conducted in different parts of the country.

Reacting sharply Dr Shashi Panja, minister women, child development and social welfare asked why she did not consider it necessary to visit Madhya Pradesh’s Morena where a pregnant woman was gang raped and later set on fire.

Again, “Why did the NCW fail to act when our female wrestlers were out on the streets protesting against @ BJP4India MP@b_bhushansharan’s sexual misconduct.”

She said why did the NCW not step in despite receiving complaints of atrocities being committed against the women in Manipur and why no heed had been paid to the Chopra tragedy where four children were buried alive due to the illegal activities of BSF.

Dr Panja said the police have so far arrested 17 persons, including Uttam Sarkar and Shibu Hazra. Team of women police officers visited Sandeshkhali and spoke to the villagers.

Meanwhile, some of the women from Sandeshkhali said on social media that some media, with vested interests, had shown women whose modesty had been allegedly outraged. They said nothing of this sort happened and alleged that it was a conspiracy of the BJP to malign the state government.
