Miss Sushmita Dev and Md Nadimul Haque filed nominations for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election, today.

Trinamul Congress has nominated four candidates for Rajya Sabha. They are Ms Sushmita Dev, Md Nadimul Haque, Mrs Mamatabala Thakur and Mrs Sagarika Ghosh.

After filing nomination, both Miss Dev and Md Haque thanked Mamata Banerjee, party’s chairperson and Abhishek Banerjee, party’s national general secretary for giving them the opportunity to raise the issues related to Bengal in the Upper House of the Parliament.

Miss Dev, who joined Trinamul Congress from the Congress, is the daughter of Santosh Mohan Dev, veteran Congress leader, who passed away some years ago.

Mrs Thakur was the party’s Lok Sabha MP from Bongaon from 2015-2019.

Mrs Ghosh was a journalist and will be filing her nomination shortly.

Trinamul Congress leaders today demanded action from the Union home ministry against the BSF, whose unplanned work led to the death of four children in Chopra.

Dr Shashi Panja, state minister for women, child development and social welfare had said earlier that the home ministry did not take any action against the BSF, despite repeated complaints from the state government.

In 2021, during the Assembly election, BSF had opened fire killing three people at Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar. “Till date, we do not know what prompted the BSF to open fire and who are the tainted personnel. The home ministry is silent on the issue,” she said.

She further said, in 2022, in Bagda of North 24-Parganas, a housewife was abused by some BSF jawans in front of her son. The son saw her mother being touched inappropriately by the alleged jawans. “Here also we noticed the uncanny silence from the home ministry,” she maintained.
