Sunil Mondal, the sitting MP from East Burdwan seat blasted against the district leadership of the Trinamul Congress after his name was discarded this year.

He said, “I’ve been axed just because I was not able to go for oiling, greasing and pleasing two district leaders – the district president Rabindranath Chatterjee and minister Swapan Debnath. They have become new tyrants for the district, which I never accepted.”

Mondal added, “These two persons are cozy with the gaddars (traitors) those are betraying the Trinamul Congress. Didi likes me but such persons have created hurdle for my candidature, I know.”

Mondal, a former MLA of Galsi from the Forward Bloc during the LF regime had switched over to the Trinamul Congress ahead of the 2011 Assembly election. He became an MP from the East Burdwan seat comprising Kalna, Katwa and part of Burdwan (North), Memari and Jamalpur Assembly constituencies twice in 2014 and 2019. He further migrated to the BJP on 19 December, 2020 with Subhendu Adhikari.

After the BJP failed to assume office, Mondal was back to the TMC fold. “Now a person like him is labelling others as gaddar. People know him. He’s lost all credibility,” said Rabindranath Chatterjee, district president of TMC here today.

The TMC has fielded Dr Sharmila Sarkar, an associate professor and psychiatrist with the National Medical College, Kolkata. She hailed from Agradwip near Katwa town.
