There was tension after the Burdwan University authorities claimed that Rs 1.93cr has been pilfered from its bank accounts, in phases, since 2022.
Barely a week ago, the BU had alleged that there had been an attempt to break fixed deposits worth Rs 21.50 lakh kept in a nationalised bank’s Burrabazar branch. The authorities suspended Bhakta Ghosh, a BU staff member, pending inquiry and retrenched a contractual worker Enamul Haq.
The BU was informed by the bank that the duo had attempted to break the FD without any advisory from the accounts officer of the university.
After this, the BU alerted all other banks where it is having its accounts. Another PSU bank, yesterday informed the BU authorities that from its branch at Jailkhana Mor, Rs 1.93cr has been withdrawn breaking three FDs since 2022. Sujit Chowdhury, the BU registrar, said, “We had clearly instructed the banks that the FDs would be placed in auto renewal mode and after maturity the cash would be transferred only in favour of the BU’s account. Still, the entire cash, in phases, had been transferred to some mischievous accounts.” He said this evening, “In consultation with our legal panel, we are preparing to lodge an FIR against the authorities who are responsible for this.”
