In the wake of the brutal murder after alleged rape of a second year post graduate medical student of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Union minister and BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar has penned an urgent letter to BJP national president and the Union minister of health and family welfare, J P Nadda urging immediate corrective measures and intervention of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the CBI to investigate the matter.
The letter highlighted the dire need for an unbiased investigation, enhanced security measures in governmentrun medical colleges and hospitals, psychological support for the medical community, and a review of infrastructure provided to medical staff. Mr Majumdar’s letter underscores the growing demand for a CBI probe to ensure an impartial investigation, emphasising the gravity of the crime. He also called for the National Medical Commission to be involved in investigating the matter and enforcing stringent security protocols within medical institutions. The letter further stressed the need for psychological counseling and moral support for the doctors, nurses, and staff at RG Kar Medical College, who are deeply affected by the incident.
Additionally, concerns were raised about the infrastructure provided to medical professionals, with particular attention to the lack of safe and secure spaces for those on duties. The Union health ministry is yet to respond to Mr. Majumdar’s letter. The brutal incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has sent shockwaves across the nation, with widespread protests and demands for swift justice. The incident, involving the brutal assault and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor, has led to calls for immediate government intervention and a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. According to reports, the young doctor’s lifeless body was discovered in a seminar hall within the hospital premises.
The autopsy confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted before being strangled and smothered to death. The victim was found in a semi-nude condition, with signs of severe assault, including bleeding from her private parts and injuries on multiple areas of her body. The horrific crime that has deeply shaken the medical fraternity also ignited widespread public outrage. Students and staff from RG Kar Medical College have organized protests and candlelight vigils to demand justice for their colleague. The victim’s family and various other quarters have been vocal in their demand for a CBI investigation.
