Parents of the students of the primary section of Hare School staged a demonstration and blocked the road in front of the school this morning, demanding immediate recruitment of teachers. This the second time within a month that the parents are agitating on the issue of recruitment of teachers and filling up the vacancies so that the regular classes can be held at the school.

The agitating parents, carrying banners and posters, raised slogans demanding immediate recruitment of teachers and urged the state education minister to intervene in the matter. The parents alleged that despite repeatedly informing the school authorities about the shortage of teaching staff and irregularity in classes, no steps have been taken to resolve the matter. “We have some shortage of teaching staff in the primary section. As of now, five posts out of total 14 are remaining vacant. In spite of that, we have been trying our best to continue with the classes as per schedule.

Earlier the parents had staged protest, raising the issue and held talks with the teacher-in-charge of the morning section after the local police offered to mediate. Later I have informed the commissioner of school education about the issue and the competent authorities are enquiring about it. But the agitators should realise that the school does not have any authority to recruit teachers. It is entirely the prerogative of the Public Service Commission. If new teachers are not posted, the school cannot do anything about it,” said the headmaster of Hare School.

He also added that there is no problem in the day section where the classes for higher education are held. According to sources, the school, which is one of the oldest and reputed schools in the city, currently has student strength of nearly 550. The traffic movement in the College Street area came to a standstill as the protesting parents sat on the road and demonstrating against the school authorities. Police forces were immediately deployed at the spot to prevent any untoward incident.
