A move is afoot by the state consumers affairs department to make the figure imprinted as “Maximum Retail Price” (MRP) of a product be made more “prominent and visible” to guard against any irregularity to protect the interests of bona fide consumers from being a victim of getting fleeced by some unscrupulous traders, said Biplab Mitra, state consumer affairs minister.
“A move to this effect had already been set in motion by the consumers affairs department to make MRP of a product more prominent and distinct and can be easily accessible consumers to obliterate any doubts in peoples’ mind regarding the price of a product they are purchasing and to bring in more transparency in price details so that the consumers do not feel insecure and susceptible to getting fleeced by traders,” averred Mr Mitra, the consumers affairs minister.
Inaugurating the threeday Kreta Suraksha Mela (consumer affairs fair) at Netaji Indoor stadium, the minister said that 89 stalls have come up so far and a few more to be added in the next few days would try canvass the importance of the department concerned and inculcate awareness among people regarding protection they are entitled to should they have any complaints of being deceived by the seller of a product.
Roshni Sen, principal secretary, department of consumers affairs told a gathering that the department has received an accolade from the Centre by winning the Skoch award by letting the mediation process to achieve a great success between warring parties of buyers and sellers over a product. Not only that, the department also takes steps by letting pre-litigation mediation a chance for an out of court settlement so that the consumers would not have to face any legal tangle.
