The DYFI state secretary Meenakshi Mukherjee is likely to be the CPM candidate for the prestigious Durgapur Lok Sabha seat.
Meenakhsi Mukherjee has become the latest poster girl of CPM in West Bengal with her simplicity and fighting abilities, after another girl from Durgapur, Aishe Ghosh, the former president of students union in JNU and SFI leader, who has also contested the 2021 Assembly polls from Jamuria unsuccessfully.
She will be pitted against two likely heavyweights – sitting MP Surendar Singh Ahluwalia from the BJP and Kirti Jha Azad from the TMC. Both the BJP and TMC are yet to announce the names of its candidates in Durgapur – Burdwan Lok Sabha seat.
Meeankshi, the girl from Kulti in West Burdwan, the oldest steel township in Asia has also fought the 2021 Assembly polls from Nandigram as the Left Front candidate and stood third after Suvendu Adhikari of BJP and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee. While one of them is now the chief minister, the other is the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly. But her tremendous fightback despite all odds has won the hearts of the red brigade.
Durgapur has traditionally been a CPM stronghold for many decades unlike Asansol. Prima facie it has been learnt that the CPM will allocate the Asansol Lok Sabha seat to the Congress and instead will fight from Durgapur as it feels it has a better strength there.
The vast majority of the industrial workers of Durgapur West and Durgapur East seat are still considered as CPM strongholds and CITU is still very much active amongst the workers of the CPSU heavy manufacturing units.
The district leadership of CPM has sent four names for the Durgapur – Burdwan seat and in that list the name of Meenakshi Mukjerjee is on top. The other names are of Partha Mukherjee, state committee member of CPM and former Zonal secretary in Asansol.
Yesterday, Meenakshi campaigned for the CPM at Sinduli Colliery belt in Andal.
