The Kolkata Police have set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the College Street violence during BJP national president Amit Shah’s roadshow and the desecration of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar’s bust on the campus of Vidyasagar College at Bidhan Sarani on Tuesday. The Kolkata Police SIT will be headed by DC North Debashis Sarkar.
“A five-member SIT to be headed by DC (North) Mr Debashis Sarkar and comprising Additional Commissioner AC DD (1), ARS inspector, Woman OC of Amherst Street, and an SI has been formed. It will steer the investigation,” Praveen Tripathi, Joint CP (Crime), announced this on Thursday.
With the campus mayhem and the subsequent desecration of Vidaysagar’s bust on the campus during the roadshow of BJP National president Mr Amit Shah triggering a political slugfest between Trinamool Congress and the BJP coupled with the Election Commission stepping in to remove the state principal secretary (home) and curtail campaigning by a day, Kolkata police are taking no chances.
“We have identified five more persons, other than the 58 arrested so far. The five have been put through thorough questioning and the process is on to fix their roles. We have retrieved more than 60 videos so far from different angles.
One thing is for certain that from the footage it is amply clear that people from the roadshow had barged into the college premise, breaking down the gate.” And the images are pretty clear who the vandals are. Investigations are on,” a senior police officer added.
Mr Tripathi said that the bike which were found set ablaze on the campus of the college is still unclaimed.
Yesterday, Mr Amit Shah at a press conference had claimed that the bikes which were reduced to ashes on the campus belonged to BJP supporters.
